When and How to Plan Your Elopement at Taughannock Falls
WHEN:
A misty morning in the month of May as the falls gush.
The best time to plan your elopement at Taughannock Falls is usually mid-morning on a weekday, when crowds are lighter and you can enjoy a more private, intimate ceremony. Seasonal timing matters, too: spring offers the most dramatic waterfall flow thanks to snowmelt—expect a wet, misty, and incredibly immersive experience. Summer, especially during school break, brings the heaviest crowds all day long, and by August the falls often slow to a trickle or dry up completely during hot stretches. Fall is breathtaking with colorful foliage, but it’s also peak tourism season, so weekdays are especially important if you want solitude. For a balance of beauty, quieter trails, and reliable waterfall flow, late May to early June tends to be the sweet spot for the least disturbed and picturesque elopement.
The dead of winter. How is this for an unreal wedding experience. Yes… It was cold as all get out. But worth it.

HOW:
Planning an elopement at Taughannock Falls is a fairly simple process, but it does require a bit of coordination with the park. Couples typically need to secure a special use permit through New York State Parks for any ceremony, even small elopements. This ensures you have permission to use your chosen location and helps the park manage visitor flow. Once your permit is approved, you can choose between two main ceremony spots: the upper overlook, which offers sweeping views and easy access, or the base of the falls, which provides a dramatic, close-up experience. The overlook is the most convenient—no hiking required and ideal for guests with mobility concerns—while the base requires a short, flat walk but gives you that stunning, immersive setting right beside the water.
No matter which location you choose, keep in mind that parking is limited within the state park, and there is a per-car parking fee during most of the year at the trail head parking lot. Planning carpooling or arriving early can help reduce costs and ensure everyone finds a spot. Once the logistics and permit are in place, the park is wonderfully straightforward to navigate, making it an easy and rewarding place for a beautiful, nature-filled elopement.
The path to the falls is about 1 mile, but is very easy and looks like this!
I often have my couples walk the river bed back to the parking lot to get a more immersive experience but also a chance to let loose and dip your feet in the water.
